The climate is temperate and with little rain. Average temperatures in winter vary between 12ºC and 14ºC. Generally January in Almada is a cold and rain month.

Meeting attire

Attendees are expected to wear normal business attire for the meeting at the Academy. Military uniforms are not usually worn by attendees, although all Portuguese military personnel will be in uniform.

Banks and Credit Cards

Banks open from Monday to Friday, from 08.30 to 15.00. They close on Saturdays and Sundays. Major credit cards are generally accepted in hotels, restaurants and shops.


Neither Portuguese Naval Academy nor CSO take responsibility for damaged, lost or stolen items, i.e. laptop computers, cellular phones, etc. Please make sure that you have an adequate personal insurance policy.

Electricity Supply

The voltage in Portugal is EU Standard of 230 Volts/50Hertz.


The international dialing code for Portugal is +351. Phone Cards can be purchased at several places (airport, rail station, coffee bar, newsagents).

Shopping in Almada

High street shops are open from Monday to Friday, 09.00 – 10.00 to 07.00. Some of them close during lunchtime, between 13.00 and 15.00. Most of the high street shops in Almada are open on Saturday mornings, 09.00 to 13.00, and are closed on Sundays. The shops and restaurants in the Almada Forum Shopping Centre are open from Monday to Sunday, from 09.00 to midnight.


Tipping, or rounding up the bill, is not obligatory but is normal unless the service was clearly below par. It is the norm to leave the "loose change" when paying for a couple of drinks. Most tip a small amount in restaurants provided the service has been good.
